Your freezer is cold, your ice is frozen — but the fridge section is warm and the milk is going off. This split is one of the most useful clues in refrigerator repair, and it usually means the cooling system works but the cold air is not getting where it needs to go. Here are five checks to do before you call for repair in the Eastern Panhandle.

Check 1: The Thermostat Setting

Start simple. Check that the fridge is set to around 37°F and the freezer to 0°F. A dial knocked by a grocery bag, or a control bumped while cleaning, is more common than people think — and it costs nothing to check.

Check 2: Vents Blocked by Food

Cold air enters the fridge section through vents, usually at the back. Overstuffed shelves, tall items, and bags pressed against the back wall block that airflow. Move food away from the vents and give it a few hours. If the temperature falls, you have found the problem.

Check 3: The Door Seal

Close the door on a banknote. If it slides out easily, the seal is letting warm, moist air in — which also causes frost. Wipe the seals clean and look for splits, warping, or sections that have come loose from the door.

Check 4: Frost on the Freezer's Back Wall

Open the freezer and look at the back wall. A thick layer of frost means the defrost system has failed — heater, thermostat, or timer — and frost is choking the evaporator coils. When that happens, cold air cannot circulate to the fridge section, even though the freezer itself stays cold.

Check 5: The Evaporator Fan

Open the freezer door and listen. You should hear a fan running. If it is silent, or if it starts and stops oddly, the evaporator fan motor may have failed. This fan is what pushes cold air from the freezer into the fridge — when it stops, the fridge warms while the freezer stays cold.

What the Split Tells a Technician

A cold freezer with a warm fridge almost always means airflow: a fan, a damper, or frost. Both sections warm points the other way — the cooling system itself. Tell us which pattern you have when you call (304) 459-8507; it shapes the diagnosis before we arrive. Our refrigerator not cooling page covers the full diagnosis, and our compressor repair page covers the case where the cooling system itself has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?

Usually airflow: the evaporator fan, the damper between the sections, or frost blocking the vents. The cooling system is working, but the cold air is not reaching the fridge.

How long can food last in a warm fridge?

A fridge section above about 40°F puts perishable food at risk within a few hours. Move food to a cooler with ice and call.

Will defrosting the freezer fix it?

Sometimes, temporarily — melting the frost restores airflow. But if the defrost system has failed, the frost comes back. The underlying fault still needs repair.
